I hadn’t read the previous two books in this series, but I don’t feel like I missed out on anything. (Happy dance!) The book started with Mason getting himself into a bind with his ex-girlfriend. That it was Mason that needed this fake engagement and not the other way around was refreshing. While Mason is painted as the guy who never takes relationships seriously, you could see that there was so much more to him than the shallow guy you’re expecting with that setup. It made him instantly likable, despite the fact he had to make up a fake relationship.
Elena is a strong woman, she’s good at her job, and she’s been burned by relationships in the past. Because she is against being in a relationship, it’s against everything in her to agree to her best friend’s request to play Mason’s fake fiance. When she learned more about Mason, she fought the feelings that could have developed because of her past. It makes for the perfect slow-burn, wondering if they will act on those budding feelings.
I’m not ready to let Mason and Elena go because they are such a fun couple. I like how they feed off each other’s snarkiness. I love that Dowell has created such a fun core group of friends and family in this book. I’m eager to start back in the beginning and meet the other characters that play a role in this series. A Temporary Engagement was a fun read from start to finish, a book you don’t want to miss out on.
