The Heights is a book of non-stop obsession. This is my second book by Candlish, and I’ve come to realize that she writes incredibly unlikeable characters. Usually, I can deal with unlikeable characters if the storyline is good. That makes this book tricky to review because it’s rare to read of such an absolutely obsessive person. It would be easy to blame Ellen’s obsession over circumstances in the book that we can’t discuss because it would spoil the book. But her obsession starts well before said circumstances.
Ellen’s relationship with revenge puts her relationship with her family on the backburner. It’s almost as if the few mentions of Ellen’s daughter Freya are written as an afterthought. Frankly, why her daughter doesn’t resent her or why she hasn’t cut off her toxic mother is beyond me. The book dragged and dragged some more. I probably wouldn’t have finished reading it if this weren’t an ARC, but The Heights will appeal to some readers. Thank you, Atria Books and Edelweiss, for sending this along.
The Heights is available on Amazon, Bookshop, and B&N.

About the Book:
The Heights is a tall, slender apartment building among warehouses in London. Its roof terrace is so discreet, you wouldn’t know it existed if you weren’t standing at the window of the flat directly opposite. But you are. And that’s when you see a man up there—a man you’d recognize anywhere. He may be older now, but it’s definitely him.
But that can’t be because he’s been dead for over two years. You know this for a fact.
Because you’re the one who killed him.
Nice honest review. The plot is intriguing.
