The Night Ship isn’t releasing until October. But this came via a Goodreads giveaway, and anyone that has won there knows they email you to remind you to review the book. Which then had me worried if I didn’t review it promptly, I wouldn’t eventually win future books. I know I can’t be the only one with that problem. So anyway, here’s a super early review.

I haven’t read Kidd before, but if this book is anything like her other books, that is something I will correct immediately. Unfortunately, this is a book I made very few notes in because I was so caught up in the story. Told in alternating timelines and perspectives, this is a unique story that I’m not sure many people would know of.
From the first few chapters, I felt the book fuse to my hands, willing me not to put it down. I loved Gil’s love of life and that his mother encouraged him to, above all, be happy. Alternatively, I adored Mayken. I loved her imagination, curiosity, and her enduring strength. She desired to be a rough and tumble sailor, but took care of others first and foremost.
This book is absolutely stunning. It’s also very haunting, and even knowing how things would turn out, brought me to tears. I felt utterly wrecked. The Night Ship is a beautiful book that will stay with me for a very long time. Thank you, Atria, for sending this absolute gem along.
